Have you ever walked into a model home and were just in awe? Mostly this happens when a builder will pay an interior designer thousands to decorate their models to make them more appealing than just your typical move in condition, white wall with no upgrades home. Let’s face it with times the way they are who can afford to add expensive and many times overly priced upgrades? There’s a few secrets that these designers use that give the home it’s “WOW” look and most people think that they’ll never get their home to look like a model. Here are a few tips that the pro’s use without breaking the bank and that are so easy you will be able to do them yourself, saving you a bunch of money.

First and most obvious is paint. Try walking into a model home with a camera, take some pictures of everything you like including the paint on the walls. You should be able to take this picture to your local home improvement store and they should be able to match the color for you. Now some of you may not like painting so I’m going to show you a way to make it fun and then get it done fast. First thing you need to do is purchase all the right painting tools because if your trying to paint detail with a large brush it will be a disaster. Next you’ll want to purchase some beverages of choice along with plans for food, good food preferably then call you friends and family. This is where you invite them over for a paint party. Our favorite beverage of choice for paint parties is champagne and if your starting early you can include orange juice to make mimosa. People love a party even if it is to paint and you’ll be surprised how many people show up at your door for free food and beverage.

After the painting is done you’ll want to get rid of any clutter and throw out anything you don’t need. If there’s still too much stuff purchase some plastic bins at your local home improvement store and store the items in an attic or storage unit. If you want your home to look like a model you’ll need to do this, after all when have you ever seen a model home that’s cluttered?

After the furniture is situated take some time to add some flowers, plants and trees to your decor. This helps fill in open spaces and is one of the most used in the decorating industry. Some secrets to save money can include using artificial plants and flowers over real ones. If you need an 8 foot tree you can purchase a 6 or 7 foot silk tree and just use a larger pot to raise it up giving you the look of a taller tree. This is an old money saving trick used by designers for many years. Purchase non potted trees and plants and pot them yourself, this will save you up to 50% off the potted counterparts. A nice planter with sand or rocks in it works well to make the plant or silk tree stand up. Try these techniques on you next decorating project and we’re sure you’ll save money and you may even be happier with your house as compared to the model home.
